Integrations can quickly turn into a tangled web. Each new connection increases the risk of errors and dependencies. That’s why it’s important to regularly assess whether integrations still deliver value—and whether they can be simplified.

Documentation, standardization, and clear ownership are essential. Without them, integrations become person-dependent and difficult to maintain.

An integration strategy should look several years ahead, but implementation should happen in stages. Start with the integrations that deliver the greatest business value and build from there. This approach builds experience, trust, and reduces the risk of costly missteps.

At the same time, the strategy should account for future changes: new systems, cloud adoption, data regulations, and security standards. A flexible architecture makes it easier to adapt as needs evolve.

Integrations are not just a technical project—they’re a partnership between IT and the business. Success requires both sides to understand each other’s perspectives: IT must grasp business goals, and business leaders must appreciate technical constraints.

Establish clear processes for prioritization, testing, and operations. Define roles and responsibilities so integrations don’t fall into a gray area between departments. When collaboration works, integrations become a strategic advantage rather than a technical challenge.

A well-aligned integration strategy isn’t about having the most connections between systems—it’s about creating meaningful connections that serve the organization’s goals. When system complexity matches organizational needs, technology becomes an enabler, not an obstacle.
